History of the Ball State Daily News

The Ball State Daily News was founded in 1922 as a weekly publication titled the Easterner. It became The Ball State News in 1937 and the Ball State Daily News in 1965, when it began publishing five days a week.

Since it's inception, it has served as a vital information link for its readers. For aspiring journalists, it serves its laboratory function as a training ground, providing many students with the practical experience not found in any textbook.

On the national level, the Daily News has repeatedly been ranked as one of the top collegiate newspapers in the nation. It has received the Associated Collegiate Press' All-American award for excellence 20 consecutive years since 1966. Fewer than 10 percent of the nation's student newspapers receive this honor.

In 1982-83, the Daily News was a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service. This may well have been the only time a college newspaper was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

In 1996, the Daily News won three professional design awards in the 17th annual Best of Newspaper Design competition. It was sponsored by the Society of Newspaper Design or SND.

The Daily News received an award of Excellence for redesign, one silver medal, and a Judges Special Recognition Award of JSR.

The silver medal was the first ever awarded to a college newspaper. The JSR award was one of only six awarded this year and the JSR winners were all professional newspapers.

The Daily News has been voted the #1 collegiate newspaper in Indiana for 11 of the last 13 years. The competition for this award includes the newspapers from I.U., Purdue, Earlham, Franklin, Notre Dame, I.S.U., and virtually every student newspaper in the state of Indiana.

In 1999, the Daily News advertising department was voted Advertiser of the Year by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association or ICPA.

It is hard work and dedication from its student staff that makes the Daily News successful. Thanks to dozens of hard-working students, this constant drive for excellence continues.
